Metropolitan Square

Washington, D.C.

NATURE OF THE PROJECT:
Blast mitigation

SCOPE OF PROJECT:
Nearly 5,650 square feet of glass protected
357 window panes
Four-sided, Blastight metal attachment system installed, replacing existing window stops
Four-sided structural silicone attachment also installed to further reinforce film and window frame

TYPE OF FILM INSTALLED:
7-mil clear fragment retention film

PROJECT DETAILS:
Building owner and property manager Boston Properties retained Weidlinger Associates, a well-known blast engineering firm, to analyze the building and glass to determine whether the existing glass system met GSA’s blast protection requirements. Weidlinger did an extensive analysis and determined that the existing glass did not meet the requirements and that the glass needed protection. Boston Properties had been dealing with HBW Group – a general contractor, for other work in the building. Boston Properties had solicited proposals from three companies to do the film work and then directed HBW to add the security window film project to its responsibilities and to use Commercial Window Shield to handle the project. With the Department of Treasury as the tenant, the project required tight security and a rigid schedule. The work was completed on time to the satisfaction of Boston Properties, HBW and Treasury Department officials.
