Dennis Chavez Federal Building

Albuquerque, New Mexico

NATURE OF PROJECT:
Glass protection for sun and security

SCOPE OF PROJECT:
Square feet of film installed – 15,000
Number of windows protected – 624

Removed existing solar window film
Two-sided, mechanical Blastight™ film attachment system utilized
A new, first-floor curtainwall had to be designed, certified, constructed and installed.

TYPE OF FILM INSTALLED:
8-mil solar security film

PROJECT CHALLENGES:
The building’s first-floor glass curtainwall, considered vulnerable, had to be replaced with all new framing and stronger glass. Such a project normally would be outside the work scope of a window film installation company. Commercial Window Shield accepted the challenge, included the new curtainwall in their scope of work and participated in the design of a new glass curtainwall. Meanwhile, the original Albuquerque glass contractor went out of business after being paid deposits by Commercial Window Shield. Before fabrication, the new system had to be evaluated by a professional engineer/blast consultant to have it certified to meet GSA’s tough security requirements. The company also dealt with multiple design changes by GSA. This delayed the project’s finish but did not impact the quality of the work, which was completed to the satisfaction of the client.

PROJECT DETAILS:
The job was bid out to a group of pre-selected government general contractors. The winning bidder selected Commercial Window Shield. Not only was their price competitive for the film work, but no other competitor was willing or able to handle the challenge of reconstructing the first-floor curtainwall.
