NATURE OF PROJECT:
Provide relief from solar heat gain to building occupants

SCOPE OF PROJECT:
Install exterior solar film under existing solar screens on a large, sloped glass atrium.  Film rejects heat and provides even HVAC usage in the building.

TYPE OF FILM INSTALLED:
20 percent Silver exterior solar film

PROJECT DETAILS AND CHALLENGES:
Building tenants working in a space below a sloped glass atrium in this 750,000 square foot suburban Washington, D.C. building were suffering from uncomfotable heat issues. Sun reflection off the atrium's angled glass created an extreme heat gain situation. Commercial Window Shield, a leading installer of reflective solar films since 1975, was asked to provide a solution after building owner, The Meridian Group, ran out of options and no other film installation company wanted to tackle the project. After exploring multiple options, CWS engineers created a pulley system allowing installers to repel down the atrium's exterior while secured in individual harnesses. [The glass was not accessable from the inside.] CWS installers first had to remove old, fixed solar screens that were no longer providing adequate protection from the sun’s heat.  After removing the screens, workers installed solar film on the exterior face of each of the glass panels. The already challenging project was made far more difficult because of the extreme summer heat.  Once the film was installed, the original solar screens were repaired and re-installed over the film to provide an extra level of protection from the sun.
